Sao Tome and Principe
Description
Sao Tome and Principe is one the Africa smallest countries; in fact, it is the third smallest country in the continent. The total land area is 960 Km2 (including both islands and 6 surrounding islanders) with a total coastline of 209 km. Sao Tome and Principe is 0.6 the size of London and 1.2 the size of York. The Inhabitants of the country are mainly urban, since only 26% are living in rural areas.
There are no direct neighbours and Gabon is the closest country with roughly 1hours and 30 minutes of flight to Africa continent.
Sao Tome and Principe present a diverse cultural background, there are traces of numerous African cultural influences mainly from central Africa which is clearly seen from variation in languages, dance, food, etc. As an ex-portuguese colony, it is evident Portugal’s influence in multiple forms and representations from food, architectural mark, etc.
The nature is almost untouched by human activity, mainly visiting the Island of Principe which exhibits a landscape that resembles the Jurassic Park Movie’s scenario. In general, either island of Sao Tome as well as Principe are marked by the colors Green (for forest), Blue (the sky and sea), White (from daylight) and Black (from night), besides multiple nuances and mixture of exuberant colors.
In Addition, these Islands are home of varieties of endemic animals and plants (some cases unique to one Island) which can be seen in Obo Natural Park in Sao Tome and in Principe.
NOTE: Island of Principe was established (in 2012) as UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
